After Italy, Hockney and Jeff Goodman visited Berlin, and here Hockney represents Jeff lying in bed in an intimate and protected position. Hockney frequently portrayed friends and lovers in bed, either asleep or in a quiet and still moment. His drawing of Jeff is a tender one, and the directness with which he approaches his subject demands a personal interpretation from the individual. Gene Baro supports this, 'Hockney does not impose a way of seeing upon what he sees; the drawings are, in effect, dialogues, rather than monologues' (see Gene Baro, 'David Hockney's Drawings', Studio International, May 1966, pp. 184-186).
