Lot Essay

During the early 1940s, Piper returned to the subject of waterfalls in Wales on several occasions. In 1944, for example, he illustrated a volume of verse called 'English Scottish and Welsh Landscape', for which he made a series of lithographs relating to this theme. He also executed an image of Pistyll Rhaidr in 1940, in which the similarities are clear to this one of 1945 (see Anthony West, John Piper, London, 1979, p. 138).
