Discussing June 4-52 (tableform) (1952), (Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo), a work painted just after the present work, Jeremy Lewison suggests that the interlocking shapes that we also find suggest the work of Serge Poliakoff, although the painterly, encrusted texture of Poliakoff's work is far removed from the refined, thinned surfaces of Nicholson's work. The colours found are those of sand, sea, land and sky bathed in the brilliant light of the Cornish peninsular (exhibition catalogue, Ben Nicholson, London, Tate Gallery, 1993, p. 228).
