By the 1950s, the landscape that Lowry knew so well was changing. The regeneration of the poorer areas of the city to make way for improved living conditions for the inhabitants, resulted in many of Lowry's favourite buildings and views being destroyed.
Lowry turned to the sketches of the street scenes that he had made throughout his long career as a rent-collector as inspiration and a series of composite landscapes were created throughout the 1950s and 1960s. These are generic scenes and lack the features that would identify specific parts of the city. There is little differentiation between one landscape and another, and hoardings, traffic and other paraphenalia of a busy street are missing. In the present work, a horse drawn carriage and a hand cart replace cars and lorries as the only mode of transport.
