Lot Essay

Dogs were a significant motif for Lowry, and his depiction of them is one of the most appealing aspects of his work. His dogs are street animals not pampered pets. They have an independent identity as urban creatures, confident and assured within their surroundings.

Lowry had a keen sense of humour and in his later works he often focussed on the comic side of a situation. In the present view, Lowry has intentionally confused the scale; a man on the left of the drawing is smaller than most of the dogs, while in the immediate background there is a row of what could be fence posts with birds on them, or alternatively church spires.
