Colonel Simson learned Japanese when posted as Liaison Officer to Japan during the Russian Japanese war in 1905. He rose to the rank of Brigadier and was awarded the Military Cross after the Great War of 1914-1918. Colonel Simson was a Kendo expert and was nicknamed 'Banzai Simson' by his fellow officers.
