Lot Essay

Regarding the present painting the artist commented, "I painted Roaring Twenties when I was commissioned to do a painting about the 1920s for the national bicentennial celebration in 1976, to be reproduced as a poster. The central figure is doing the Charleston, and most of the other women have their cloche hats pulled down. In a sense it's an exercise, and it may be an essay in cuteness, but I was attracted by the subject--which is the only real motivation for me." (S.R. Frankel, Jack Levine, New York, 1989, p. 115)
