COMENIUS
Ludus pilae, Tennis-play
woodcut, [1658 or later]
7 x 7in. (18 x 18cm.), framed and glazed.
Illustrated: Julian Marshall, Annals of Tennis, 1878, plate 17. From an English edition of the Orbis sensualium pictus of Comenius. Marshall observes that: "the rackets are strung diagonally ... the strings seem to be taken round the wood of the bow, and not, as now, through it. The persons outside the court are engaged in playing balloon-ball, then not an uncommon game in England, as has been shown by ... Gervase Markham". He also reprints the explanation of the picture (p. 84) which has numerals corresponding to those in the plate.
