REAL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH, OCTOBER 1898
photograph showing Latham and Pettitt at Brighton with other players including George Lambert, Charles Lambert and Charles Lesueur, manuscript key on reverse of card mount, 8¼ x 11½in. (21 x 29cm.).
[and:] a similar photograph commemorating the 1907 championship match, showing Latham and Fairs at Brighton, seated and surrounded by other players including J.M. Heathcote, Jay Gould, G.F. Covey and E.B. Noel, manuscript key on reverse of mount, 8½ x 11¼in. (21.5 x 29cm.), both unframed.
The world championship tennis match of October 1898 was played at Brighton. With Latham already dominating the game by this time, it was hoped that Pettitt, coming out of retirement, could use his newly-invented overhead railroad service to defeat him. Such expectations proved wrong as Latham won by 7 sets to 0. In 1905, however, he lost the championship title to Cecil Fairs. A second world title match was played against Fairs in Brighton 1907. By the end of the first day, Latham was winning by 3 sets to 1, and by 5 sets to 3 at the end of the second. He then won the first two sets of the third day to claim a 7/3 victory. However, the closeness of the games at 51 to 46 is a reflection of how well matched the players were, with Latham narrowly winning his final world championship. (2)
