Paris: Estienne Loyson, 1659. 12° (14.3 x 8.2cm), collation: *6 [*1=frontispiece] A-Z6 Z6bis Aa-Hh6; [12] 452p. Engraved frontispiece signed "HF", woodcut initials and ornaments (waterstained at lower margins), later 19th-century red morocco, marbled endpapers, gilt and marbled edges (staining on covers). Provenance: Charles Delahaye, his gift to Spencer Cowper (front blank inscribed: 'Donne à Mr Spencer Cowper par Biboche au jeu de Paume du passage Sandrié 1er Mars 1861" -- Edward Arnold (bookplate). Exhibited: The Queen's Club, 2004, no. 302.

Second edition. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED BY THE GREAT "BIBOCHE " IN 1861. This work was first published in 1654 but the present edition was the first to include a chapter on "Le jeu royall de la paume" (pp. 131-168) drawn from Hulpeau and Forbet. Tennis continued to feature in a long series of editions that followed under variant titles for well over a century (see lots 51, 55, 63). This edition is described as "very rare" by Marshall (p. 138). Chess is included on pp. 385-95. Van der Linde II, pp. 50-51; Garnett p. 289; Henderson p. 181.
