JEAN BARBEYRAC
Traité du jeu où l'on examine les principales questions de droit naturel et de morale qui ont du rapport à cette matière. Amsterdam: Pierre Humbert, 1709. 2 volumes in one, 8vo. (15.1 x 9.6cm), [2] lxv [1] 646 [24]p., engraved frontispiece by and after G. Schouten, titles in red and black (waterstain at lower margins affecting frontispiece, imprints, and occasionally text), contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine, red edges (joints cracked but holding, spine chipped, extremities rubbed). Provenance: 'ECP' (mongram on bookplate, c. 1900).
FIRST EDITION. Barbeyrac (1674-1744), a celebrated jurist, was reportedly inspired to write this treatise, which was far ahead of its time, by games played at the house of his mother-in-law. In considering which sports are suitable for the fair sex, he notes that la paume was not only popular in ancient Greece but played by women too (p. 391). Further references to tennis occur on p. 398n and 426. A second edition appeared in 1737. Not in Henderson.
