Le petit cousin de La Fontaine ou Le fablier des graces: almanach moral et amusant. Paris: chez Janet, [1800]. 24mo. (10.6 x 5.9cm), engraved title and 11 plates, woodcut tail-pieces (lacks the last printed leaf in the monthly tables at end), contemporary French green morocco, covers with elaborate gilt frame around a circular inlay of flowers embroidered in coloured silks, flat spine with repeated fleur-de-lis, pink silk doublures at front with an inset looking-glass, pocket for notes at rear (extremities lightly rubbed, two small holes in spine, glass cracked), contemporary calf carrying case.

A CHARMING LADY'S ALMANAC CONTAINING A VERSE FABLE AND ENGRAVING ON TENNIS. Fable VII describes a tennis player who only succeeds in gaining enough self-control to beat his opponent after changing his racket. However, according to the moral, this is not an expedient that will work in the game of life where there is no point in trying to change one's station. "De raquette en vain change-t-on ... Le grand art dans ce monde & le plus necesssaire, C'est de prendre la balle au bond". Cohen/de Ricci 66; not in Carteret or Henderson.
Special notice
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
