Musas rhetorices seu carminum libros quinque, edited by J.A. Amar. Paris: Aug. Delalain, 1809. 12° (15.9 x 8.9cm), woodcut title-device, with half-title, contemporary French marbled calf, gilt triple fillets, spine gilt, gilt edges (extremities rubbed). Provenance: purchased from Leo Baer, Paris, 5 March 1937, for 150 fr. (£1. 10s).
FIRST EDITION. Professor Emeritus at the Université royale de France, and curator at the bibliothèque Mazarine, Amar du Rivier (b. 1765) was the author or editor of a wide range of French and Latin works. The present anthology, which contains poems by his fellow academics, includes a section headed "Origo ludorum juvenilium. Metamorphoses et fabulae" with a 5-page Latin poem on "Pila palmaria" ("La paume") by Antoine Turgot (pp. 25-29), as well as others on billiards, chess, and "Le ballon". Not in Henderson.
