London: The Field, 1878. 4to., title in red and black, wood-engraved frontispiece and 45 plates on 27 leaves, original brown cloth, front cover panelled in black and gilt with central motif of tennis balls surmounted by crossed rackets, lower cover panelled in blind, gilt and black spine panels, top edges gilt (slight soil mark on upper cover, extremities rubbed, inner hinges neatly repaired). Exhibited: The Queen's Club, 2004, no. 313.
FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM. Marshall's book first appeared in chapters in the columns of the Field from August 1876 to November 1877, and has remained an indispensable reference work to the present day. There is also a variant binding in green. Garnett p. 294: "a most comprehensive book on the history of tennis, location of early courts, great players, and all aspects of the game"; Henderson p. 192.
