DONATO VELLUTI
La Cronica Domestica ... scritta fra il 1367 e il 1370, con le addizioni di Paolo Velluti scritte fra il 1555 e il 1560. Florence: G.C. Sansoni, 1914. Large 8vo., 6 photographic facsimiles, 2 folding, and 5 genealogical tables, 4 folding (browning to page edges, pp. 113-120 with repaired marginal tear), brown morocco gilt by Thomas Alcott, c. 1950, top edge gilt, others uncut.
Second enlarged edition, following publication of the first in 1731. VELLUTI IS THE FIRST WRITER KNOWN TO HAVE USED THE WORD "TENES". The reference occurs in the context of the arrival of 500 French cavaliers in Florence in 1324. Thomas Lippaccio, an ecclesiastic, is said to have played with them all day at "la palla colloro" and to also have started to play "tenes", though most of the knights were subsequently killed at the battle of Altopascio: "Giucava tuttodì a la palla colloro; e in quello tempo si cominciò di qua a giucare a tenes" (p. 81). "This is the only time the word is mentioned in Italian literature" comments Whitman (pp. 26-27). "It was never used before, and it does not appear again. Without doubt Velluti merely quoted the French knights, who brought the name and the game from over the mountains". Henderson p. 167.
