A PRESENTATION RACKETS RACQUET
made by Jefferies and Malings of Woolwich, ash-head, walnut throat, strung in natural gut with double cross strings on half the head, red gut trebling (red faded), braided silver band on top of grip, remains of sheepskin grip, finished with braided silver butt cap, end inscribed "Oxford University Prize, Racquet 1857".
Exhibited: "The Queen's Club Centenary Year, An Exhibition of Real Tennis and Rackets", 13 May 1986 -- "An Exhibition of Tennis and Rackets", The Queen's Club, 9-17 October 2004, no. 704.
In 1857 the Oxford University prize racquet was awarded to R.C. Glanville of Merton College (see Fifty Years of Sport at Oxford, Cambridge and the Great Public Schools, London, 1913). It is believed that 1857 is the year that the silver racquet was first awarded at Oxford. EXTREMELY RARE
