AN EGYPTIAN PAINTED LIMESTONE GROUP STATUE
MIDDLE KINGDOM, DYNASTY XII, 1991-1783 B.C.
Depicting five individuals, two men and three women, all sculpted in high relief, standing with their feet together on an integral plinth against a back support, the figures evenly spaced, the men wearing kilts and shoulder-length wigs, the woman clad in tightly-fitted sheaths and full tripartite wigs with inward-sloping lappets, four of the five identified by inscriptions, parts of which begin in the spaces between and continue on the front of the garments, including Ibi to the left, his wife Ka-es to his left, Hor-wer-nakht in the center, Mery to the right, the woman on the far right not identified, each preserving white pigment for the garments, red for the flesh of the men, and yellow for that of the women, the base inscribed with a single band of hieroglyphs, divided at the center yielding two hetep-di-nesu formulas, reading in opposite directions, "An offering which the king gives to Osiris, the great god, the lord of Abydos, for the ka of Ibi, the vindicated, the possessor of an endowment (or possessor of veneration), an offering which the king gives to Wep-wawet, the lord of Abydos, for the ka of Ka-es, an offering which the king gives to Osiris for the ka of the lady of the house, Ka-es..., the vindicated, an offering which the king gives to Wep-wa-wet for the ka of ... Hor-wer-nakht, the vindicated, an offering which the king gives to Wep-wa-wet for the ka of the lady of the house ... Mery ..?..., the vindicated"
