AN EGYPTIAN BLACK GRANITE BUST OF A WOMAN
MIDDLE KINGDOM, DYNASTY XII, 1991-1783 B.C.
Probably from a standing figure, her arms held at her sides, wearing a closely-fitted tunic with a thick hem positioned just below her breasts, the incised shoulder straps covering the outer edges of her breasts, her long wig with side lappets, the strands of hair incised, running horizontally above the forehead, behind her ears and vertically along the lappets, her broad triangular face with the large eyes set far apart, each convex and tilted slightly forward along their upper edges, with sculpted lids, the upper thicker than the lower, the modelled brows curving along the contours of the eyes, the straight lips only slightly wider than the base of the broad nose, the ears highly stylized and asymmetrical, the proper right higher than the left, the wig extending in back over her rounded shoulders to the uninscribed back pillar
8 in. (20.3 cm.) high
