Lot Essay

In May 1899, Iakunchikova went to Moscow in order to spend the summer at Nara, the estate of her sister-in-law. At Nara, in addition to the natural beauty of her surroundings, Iakunchikova found the essence of what inspired her about Russia: '...there was a terrace, reminiscient of Vvedenskoe; a dense forest of fir-trees all around, with a solitary dilapidated chapel; by the road there was a holy well with a cross; old churches, little fir trees and young pines.'. (Mir iskusstva, 1904, no. 3, p. 121)
