'Russian beauty' is a smaller variant of a work completed in 1968. The original is executed on veneer and incorporates fabric and pearls into the design, see N. A. Vysotskii, Il'ia Glazunov, Moscow, 1986, no. 94, illustrated.
The inspiration for 'Mother' may have been taken from Glazunov's earlier canvas 'Roads of war' (1854-1957); the figure of the old woman seated left in this epic canvas bears striking similarities to the Mother depicted in this portrait (see N. A. Vysotskii, Il'ia Glazunov, Moscow, 1986, no. 35, illustrated).
