Rectangular with rounded corners, chased and engraved around the upper and lower borders with a frieze of laurel clad eagles and palmettes, the central section of the cover with ribbon-tied reeded frame and applied with entwined initials, the reverse engraved with the first two bars of the first movement of Beethoven's String Quartet in C minor, opus 18, no. 4, and later inscribed in Russian 'To Always be happy, Uncle Leon and Aunt Zina, 26/12 1972', with gilt interior, marked inside cover and base
