Lot Essay

The house in this picture has traditionally been identified as Syon House, on the Thames at Brentford. This identification seems plausible, although it has also been suggested by Mark Bills, Museum of London, that it could be the house of the rich merchant Moses Hart (d.1756), on the Thames between Twickenham and Iselworth.
