Lot Essay

When this picture was sold by Lord Tweedmouth at Christie's in 1905 it was described in the provenance as having been in the collection of 'Campbell the poet'. This seems likely to refer to the celebrated Scottish poet, Thomas Campbell (1777-1844) author of Lord Ullin's daughter, Lochiel's warning and Glenara.

The traditional identification of the sitter as Sir Walter Scott is erroneous.
