Lot Essay

Walter Hutchinson acquired this Morland in 1947 to add to his growing collection of sporting paintings, drawings, prints and bronzes. Hutchinson had aspirations of establishing a 'National Gallery of British Sports and Pastimes', exhibiting six hundred of his works in Hutchinson House, London between 1945 and 1950. Reading the News was exhibited as no. 91 in the Hutchinson House Collection. When Hutchinson died in 1950, the collection was dispersed (through sales at Christie's in July and December 1951, April 1952 and October 1955).
