Read moreThese splendid pliant (lots 214-215) were part of the purchases of furniture and objets d'art made by Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1784-1844) just after 1815 in Paris for Schloss Ehrenburg in Coburg and his country seat Schloss Greinburg in Austria. They are stamped with his cypher 'E' beneath a crown, and variously numbered. His acquisitions included various sets of mahogany seat-furniture, such as dining-chairs and chaises en gondole, but also more opulent and richly-carved giltwood furniture such as the present pliants (L. de Groër, Les Arts Décoratifs de 1790 à 1850, Fribourg, 1985, p. 123, 131, figs. 213, 236
Georges (1739-1814) and his middle son, François-Honoré-Georges Jacob (1770-1841), dit Jacob-Desmalter employed this stamp between 1803 and 1813. Prior to that, François-Honoré-Georges was in partnership with his elder brother Georges II, when they used the stamp JACOB FRERES/RUE MESLEE (1796-1803). However, after Georges II's untimely death in 1803, George Jacob sr, re-joined the firm almost until the end of his life.

Each with rectangular seat and squab cushion covered red silk velvet decorated with silver and gold thread, on X-shaped supports centred by a patera and decorated with lotus leaves and palmettes, joined by turned stretchers, one stamped twice 'JACOB D RUE MESLEE' and with crowned 'E' ink brand numbered 'No 2435', the other stamped '...LEE' (2)
