François Ageron, recorded in the Place Dauphine between 1773 and 1783.
With its charming composition, showing putti symbolising the Sciences, this clock is a fine example of the influences of the Siècle des Lumières -or Age of Enlightment- on the Arts. At the time, there was a particular trend for Science and the scientific or technical objets d'art were among the most prized items in the cabinets de curiosités, even Louis XVI took part in the creation of intricate lock mechanisms, and the circles of amateurs flourished around Europe. Interestingly, a closely related clock was made by the celebrated English clock-maker and bronzier Vulliamy; it was sold, Christie's, London, 21 October 1885, lot 28.
