The inscription translates as:
Time [is] the consumer of things -- Oh how fleeting are beauty and youth -- The nature of mortal things [is] very cruel
A comparable ivory example is in Paul Williamson ed., European Sculpture at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1996, p.179 and the Tate Gallery London hold a similar example of Autumn also in ivory.
