Lot Essay

Reynold Brown (1917-1991) won a scholarship to art school in the early 1930s. He embarked on a career in comic book art until a providential meeting with Norman Rockwell convinced him to pursue his dreams of becoming an illustrator. Moving to New York at the end of the Second World War, Brown started designing covers for magazines and books, including Popular Science and the paperback editions of the Perry Mason mysteries.
Brown moved into designing film posters at Universal Studios. His career spanned over 250 campaigns between 1952 and 1970 and included artwork for Ben Hur, Spartacus, Dr. Zhivago and The Alamo. He is most admired for his work in science-fiction and horror 'B' movies, including The Incredible Shrinking Man, Attack Of The 50ft Woman and Creature From The Black Lagoon. Brown also taught at the Art Center College of Design in California, where two of his students were the renowned illustrators Bob Peak and Drew Struzan.
