The theatre lobby was usually the place to start and it would be covered inside and out with an assortment of posters, gimmicks, pamphlets and props. A collage of photographs, stills and taglines would be posted onto large display boards that were then coated with varnish. Cheap and eye-catching, the display boards where intended to persuade audiences that they offered a mere preview of the titillating delights that awaited them within. These particular board-displays are one-offs and came from the basement of a cinema in downtown San Francisco. Probation, Main Street Girls and Gambling With Souls still retain their original transport labels stuck to the back of the board with instructions for them to be returned to the production company after use. Probation was the property of Broadway Roadshow Attractions, Main Street Girls had been produced by Sonney Roadshow Attractions, and Gambling With Souls was produced by another of Sonney's companies, Sonney Amusement Enterprises.

In the early 1930s, two of exploitation's most successful roadshow men, Dwain Esper and Louis Sonney, decided to take a film called Maniac on the road. The film, which was about a crazed scientist, was a flop until they cunningly renamed it Sex Maniac. The crowds then began lining up around the block.
