Details
FAULKNER, William. Absalom, Absalom! New York: Random House, 1936.
8o. Folding map printed in red and black. Original black cloth; pictorial dust jacket (very slight wear to extremities): quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: Richard R. Kilroy Jr. (presentation inscription).

FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FAULKNER TO RICHARD R. KILROY on the front free endpaper: "For Richard R. Kilroy, Jr. William Faulkner Los Angeles, Cal 25 March, 1937."

Absalom, Absalom! was published in late October 1936, also in a limited signed issue of 300 copies. It was the first major novel brought out by Random House, which promoted Faulkner more aggressively than any of his previous publishers.

This copy was inscribed when Faulkner was working in Los Angeles, having just moved into a house at 129 North Le Doux in Beverly Hills, not far from the studio. He was working on a script assignment for Walter D. Edmonds' popular "Drums Along the Mohawk." Inscribed copies of Absalom, Absalom! are VERY SCARCE, with only three recorded at auction in the last thirty years according to American Book Prices Current (this copy in 1982, one inscribed to Malcolm Cowley [Goodwin copy] in 1977, and a copy inscribed to John Crown [Rechler copy] in 2002). Massey 2; Peterson A17c.
