"Eugene Field was the most famous journalist-bibliophile of the nineteenth century. He was the editor of the St. Joseph Gazette, the St. Louis Journal, the Kansas City Times, and the Denver Tribune... Field possessed a whimsicality which showed both in his personal relationships, and in his writings, which were numerous" (DAB).
