Lot Essay

Söhn records an edition of thirty impressions of the second state. However, in 1996 an impression of the first state appeared on the market with the numbering 18/30 crossed out and with the following inscription by the artist: 'nach 6 Drucken Platte überarbeitet, dunkler in den Flächen - 12 Drucke!' ('after 6 impressions plate reworked, darker in the planes - 12 impressions!'). (Hauswedell & Nolte, Hamburg, 5 June 1996, lot 204.) Although some known impressions of the first state are numbered as if from an edition of thirty, it is questionable whether such an edition was ever published. The present impression of the second state is from an edition of 12 only.
