Kirchner often portrayed himself as a passive and detached onlooker of the principal scene. In this very spontaneous and sketchily etched print, he seems to squat on top of the hill watching the peasants making hay.

Early impressions from this plate, printed by the artist himself, are exceedingly rare. In fact Wolf-Dieter and Annemarie Dube, for their catalogue raisonné of Kirchner's printed works, had to illustrate a later reprint of the plate, as an early impression, such as the present one, was not obtainable.
