MEZCALA TEMPLE
LATE PRECLASSIC, CA. 300-100 B.C
Standing on a tall stepped platform, with a stairway leading to four thick columns with banded lintel; in gray stone.
The Mezcala works in the form of houses or temples were first collected in the late 19th century along with other Guerrero sculpture, focused interest in the art of this area was brought to a fore with the seminal 1946 paper of Miguel Covarrubias. Subsequent exhibitions in the 1960s in Mexico City and New York re-enforced the appeal of these small, evocative architectural models which are ''located at the junction of stillness and motion, time and eternity" (Carlo Gay, Mezcala Architecture in Miniature, 1987: 7).
