A PAIR OF GEORGE III SILVER SOUP-TUREENS AND COVERS
MARK OF JOHN ROMER, LONDON, 1764
Each of oval bombé form with a shaped gadrooned rim, on four scroll feet, applied with leaf and berry motifs and with two shell and rocaille feet, engraved with a crest, the detachable covers part fluted and with an artichoke finial, marked underneath and on flange of cover
14½ in. (36.8 cm) long over handles
161 oz. (5,020 gr.)
The crest is probably that of Townend, for George Townend (d.1812), of Grimston, co. York and Kirby Wharfe, West Riding, co. York. The crest in the arms, as granted in 1792, is blasoned 'On a Wreath of the Colours A Mount Vert thereon a Lion rampant Erminois gorged with a collar invected Azure in the paws a Cross couped Gules between a branch of Olive and a branch of Palm proper'. The crests, as engraved on the tureens, show the lion rampant holding a cross patonce. It is likely that this form of the crest was unofficially used by the family until legitimised by the College of Arms in 1792. (2)
