There are strong similarities between the present miniature of Prince James Francis Edward Stuart and a three-quarter length painting on canvas in the collection of the Palacio da Liria, Madrid - a portrait commissioned from Antonio David by the prince himself. During his exile James Stuart visited Rome at the invitation of Pope Clement XI and met David who, at that time, was employed by the papal court. It was on this occasion that the portrait was commissioned and on its completion was sent to James's mother, Mary of Modena, at the Court of St. Germain.
