The sitter is probably identical with the Marquis de Brienne, colonel of the Artois regiment in the army of King Louis XV, who died heroically during the Battle of Exiles in 1747 fighting against the troops of the King of Sardinia. After he lost one arm, he returned to the fences and declared 'Il m'en reste un autre pour le service du roi' and was killed.
