Lot Essay

Leopold II, third son of Francis I and Maria Theresa, succeeded his father as Grand-Duke of Tuscany in 1765 and his brother Joseph I as Emperor in 1790. He pacified the Netherlands and Hungary. He was led by the downfall of his sister Marie-Antoinette (see lot 119) to form an alliance with Russia against France but died before war broke out.
