Lot Essay

John Hussey, Baron Delaval, son of Mr Blake-Delaval, was created a peer of Ireland as Baron Delaval of Redford, co. Wicklow on 17 October 1783 and enrolled as a peer of Great Britain as Baron Delaval of Seaton Delaval, co. Northumberland in 1786. He contributed to the industrial development of parts of Northumberland, with the establishment of plantations and farmsteads, and the improvement of the harbour at Seaton Sluice, facilitating the trade of coal and goods from Delaval's Royal Northumberland Bottle Works. He was elected M.P. of Berwick in 1754. He married Susanna Potter, née Robinson, widow of John Potter in 1750 and had issue and, secondly, Miss Knight and had no issue when his honours became extinct.
Downman painted oil portraits of various members of the Delaval family, notably Lady Delaval (G. C. Williamson, John Downman, London, 1907, p. 13) and Miss Delaval (op. cit., p. 52). A version of the present miniature also by Downman was sold Christie's, London, 30 April, 1996, lot 143, and another Bonhams, London, 30 November 1994, lot 118 now forms part of the Draper Gift, donated to Kenwood House, Hampstead Heath, London (S. Edwards et al., Miniatures at Kenwood The Draper Gift, London, 1997, no. 51, p. 124, illustrated in colour p. 125).
