Archibald William, son of John, 7th Marquess of Queensberry (1779-1856) and his wife Sarah (d. 1864), daughter of James Sholto Douglas, was an officer in the 2nd Life Guards, Privy Councillor and Lieutenant and Sherriff of Drumfriesshire. He was killed at Kinmount by the accidental explosion of his gun. He married Caroline Margaret (d. 1904), younger daughter of General Sir William Clayton, 5th Bt., and had issue.
