A handwritten label on the reverse of the miniature traces the family lineage to Lady Anne Campbell, daughter of 2nd Duke of Argyll who married James, 2nd Earl of Bute in 1711. Their daughter, Lady Anne Stewart married 3rd Lord Ruthven in 1736. Their daughter, the Hon. Anne Ruthven (d. 1801) married John, 11th Lord Elphinstone in 1762.
