Lot Essay

Francis Joseph, eldest son of Archduke Francis Charles and Sophie, Archduchess of Austria and Princess of Bavaria who was brother and heir of Austrian Emperor Ferdinand I. As his father renounced his claim to the throne, Francis became Emperor as Francis Joseph I when Ferdinand abdicated near the end of the Revolution of 1848. He married Duchess Elisabeth in Bavaria who became Elisabeth of Austria or better known as 'Sisi' or 'Sissi'.
