Lot Essay

Josephine, Countess Wratislaw-Nitrowitz married Prince Karl Schwarzenberg (1802-1858) in 1823. He was the second son of Karl Philipp Schwarzenberg (1771-1820), Austrian Field Marshal and ambassador to France who led the Austrian forces sent to aid Napoleon I in the Russian campaigns of 1812. When Austria joined the allies in 1813 against Napoleon, Schwarzenberg was the senior general of the victorious coalition and commanded at Leipzig in 1813 and entered Paris in 1814.
