Apparently trained as an engineer, he resisted expectations to become an artist. Well travelled and arrived on the shores of Bali in 1932 to pursue his art and where he remained for most of his later life. Inspired by Balinese culture and often used Balinese dancers as his subject, his most famous muse was Ni Pollok whom he married. Very well collected by the expatriate community with famous personalities like Pearl S. Buck and Eleanor Roosevelt visiting him regularly and held a few highly successful exhibitions in Singapore. His home studio was eventually transformed into a museum commemorating his legacy.
