Lot Essay

Antonio Blanco is known to have deep attachment with his works and habitually designed and ordered specially-made frame for his works. The subject, composition and the frame are all part of the artist's expression, which he indulged with opulent extravagance. The present work is recently framed in the characteristic extravagant style of Antonio Blanco.

In contrast, the sitter is depicted at her most demure and subtle. With her face hiding away in her folded right arm, Blanco was less concerned with her identity but more preoccupied in the idea of timeless and universal beauty. Hardly adorned apart from the traditional Balinese mask that was held in her left hand, the sitting tool of the sitter is also hardly discernible. The simplicity of the backdrop is designed purposefully to highlight the beautiful and ethereal qualities of his sitter. Paint was thinly applied and colours were limited to just a few, which adds to the serenity of reclining nude and avoided any material distraction incurred by heavy impasto or rich colours.
