Lot Essay
Natee is most known for his intriguing evocative exploration of 2-dimensional paintings. In a bold move in his artistic progression, the artist advanced towards the 3-dimensional media as exemplified by this present exclusive lot Sa-kae.
After completion of his still life series in 1997, he further developed on this artistic direction by expounding on the flat planes of a painting, bringing to it added perspectives and in a different medium altogether. This is the second sculpture created by the artist and is the first such work to be made available via this auction. The first sculpture was a piece also inspired by a plant - the lotus leaf - which became a commissioned piece made specially for the swanky The Metropolitan hotel in Bangkok in 2002. He had initially developed a large scale painting of the same subject prior to executing it in its 3-dimensional form.
This sculpture Sa-kae is the following exploration of the surfaces and textures of a dried flower by the same name. Again, Natee used the same methodology in bring to life this flower. He was inspired by the dried flower and fruit that he had set up for a still life painting and concentrated on manifesting the subject in its most natural state thereon. Sa-kae is cast in bronze and is a brilliantly beautiful sculpture in its movement of fluid lines and curves that turn gracefully about the work, making this a refined tribute to the flower.
Natee has always preferred choosing the smallest subjects which interested him and magnifying the work to a much increased scale. The move towards constructing a renewed visual through the 3-dimensional actualization of the subject is only natural, exciting not only the artist but the viewer.
