Lot Essay

This is an extremely interesting group of drawing copies by the family and pupils of John Sell Cotman, which almost certainly date from Cotman's period in Great Yarmouth (1812-1823). These were used for teaching purposes and formed part of Cotman's circulating library of numbered drawings for the use of his pupils, thus nos. 1632 and 1957 bear John Sell Cotman's signature and evidence of some work by him; no. 1729 shows evidence of his hand, although the signature does not appear to be his; nos. 2489 and 2613 are possibly family drawings while remainder are probably pupil copies.

No. 2489 Yarmouth Beach, (illustrated) relates directly to a finished John Sell Cotman watercolour, dated 1809, now in the Norwich Castle Museum (ex-Russell J. Colman collection).
