The pair of guns by Henry Atkin here offered have been in constant use by the Earls of Strathmore since the early 1900s and frequently seen action in shooting parties of great distinction. The 14th Earl, whose daughter Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married in 1923 the future King George VI when he was Duke of York, was a fine and enthusiastic sportsman who could be said, in his life, to have enjoyed the golden era of game shooting. He shot consistently with the Royal Family at Sandringham, and much elsewhere in Norfolk, as duck shooting held a particular appeal for him. Down the years successive Earls of Starthmore have used these guns with equal keeness and in consequence their career must be regarded as distinguished.

The accompanying photograph shows the 14th Earl of Strathmore with H.R.H. The Duke of York, later H.M. King George VI, in the Italian garden at Glamis castle.
