Lot Essay

Robert Le Lorrain was a talented sculptor with a chequered career which was hampered by financial misfortune and a difficult character. The present composition is listed by Souchal (F. Souchal, French Sculptors of the 17th and 18th centuries - The reign of Louis XIV, Paris, 1981, II, pp. 334-335) as having been created before 1699. A number of versions of varying dates are known, both with and without the infant satyr.
