Lot Essay

This work is included in the catalogue raisonné which will be published in 2007 by the Wildenstein Institute, in the section 'Oeuvre de Courbet et Collaboration' and dated 1874/1877.
The Chateau de Chillon is a landmark that has inspired writers such as Dumas, Shelley and Hugo, and artists such as Turner and Delacroix. Courbet was drawn to the castle after fleeing Paris and settling on the banks of Lake Geneva.
